GRIFFITH, Ind. – United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) is sponsoring a food drive at its Griffith, Ind., branch to collect goods for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, serving Lake and Porter Counties. Through December 15, 2013, UFCU will collect unopened, non-perishable food items in its lobby. All are welcome to stop in with a donation.

Food is distributed to more than 100 local hunger relief agencies, like food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Last year, it distributed more than 5.1 million pounds of food through a network of 110 agencies, feeding more than 10,000 people each week.

The agency’s Executive Director, Arleen Peterson, explained the agency’s broader mission, which is to provide nutritional support to all those in need of hunger relief, and added: “Our ongoing focus is to end hunger and help individuals move towards self-sufficiency.”

“Unfortunately, the need for basic food staples increases every year,” said UFCU Griffith Branch Manager Sylvia Torbica. UFCU has been involved with the Food Bank in a number of ways, participating in food drives, volunteerism, and other fundraising efforts.

Since the food drive began in late October, UFCU has seen tremendous response by Members and non-Members alike. “I am continually amazed each time I see our Members, friends, and neighbors come together to help those less fortunate,” said Torbica. “We’ve had supporters travel from not only Griffith, but Highland, Munster, and even as far as Valparaiso.”

“Serving others is a core philosophy for us,” explained Torbica. “It also aligns with what the Food Bank does every year for our community – work that is unparalleled for an agency of its size.”

“We’ve seen the area overcome hardships, job loss, and a tough economy,” added UFCU President/CEO Gary Easterling. “We want to support the work of agencies like the Food Bank, whose mission is to serve anyone in need, but especially children.”

With 22 offices nationwide, UFCU develops strong roots in every city it serves, and those roots are especially strong in Griffith. “Sylvia and her staff are tireless in their efforts to serve the less fortunate,” concluded Easterling.

To contribute to the food drive, residents can visit the UFCU Griffith Branch at 510 North Broad Street, Griffith, IN 46319. Canned fruit, vegetables and meat, canned tuna, oatmeal, peanut butter, pasta, and macaroni and cheese are eight essentials the Food Bank appreciates.
